Structure Plan: Westbahnhof, Competition - Vienna 2002

Urban Design Studio: Alex Wall, Erik Behrens

Intention: To provide a spatial structure and planning strategy to create a new identity for the Westbahnhof (Europaplatz) and the XV District. As a new urban sub-center with optimal access, the Westbahnhof area will be developed with new buildings clustered around the terminal end of the Westbahnhof.

1 Logo: The Westbahnhof complex intersects two axes: Schoenbrunn Palace with the Technical Museum, and Mariahilferstrasse with the Guertel (ring-boulevard), creating two new development areas.

2 Projection: The east-west break in the urban fabric is terminated by a new mixed-use tower on the Europaplatz. A series of bridges, including a north-south green axis, will create new links.

3 Section: The urban surface of Europaplatz becomes a matrix for the flows of people and vehicles using two levels of the Westbahnhof, two underground lines, streetcars, and public and private transportation.
